I have been trying to learn German for the last few months. One thing I do is I listen to German music even though I don't understand much of it at all.With some help I was shown how to search to get Christian German music. So, I was listening today and I suddenly heard the tune that was Via Dolarosa...and I was reminded how powerful the music itself is. I mean, I couldn't remember any of the words (other than via Dolorosa) and yet it was moving to hear the music!!
Well, it got me curious about the song. A song that is very moving for the music alone, but also for the words. So, I found a few things. First, this is the name of the street is actually supposed to be where Christ walked on his way to be crucified. However, it is also Latin. It's basic meaning is just "Painful Way" but Way of Grief, Way of Sorrows, and Way of suffering all came up as well.
See, I was under the impression that it was just something like "the way" and not anything this specific. Now the whole meaning has changed. So, here are the words to the song:

He was bleeding from a beating, there were stripes upon his back, and he wore a crown of thorns upon His head and He bore with every step the scorn of those who cried out for His death.
Down the Via Dolorosa, called the way of suffering, like a lamb came the Messiah, Christ the King. But He chose to walk that road out of His love For you and me.
I don't know why, but this song really hit me this time. Christ, eternal God who had veiled His deity, came to Earth so that He could place my sin on His shoulders. My sin from my childhood, my sin from last night, my sin from tonight, and the sin I will ever commit. I am one of the reasons Christ went to the Christ.
